The Volkswagen Jetta has experienced six generations of American streets, having first debuted in 1979. While the overall design has seen numerous changes and tweaks, the overall Jetta line has maintained the same rigorous standards of dependability and affordability that we have come to expect from Volkswagen.

However, this begs the question of what improvements have been made in recent years. Comparing the 2018 Jetta with its 2017 counterpart reveals several areas of improvement and refinement, an attention to detail that is the hallmark of Volkswagen’s German engineering.

While there are no significant structural changes between the 2017 and 2018 model years, there are some potent new options available. Most notable amongst these is an increase in trim options, up to six total. Additionally, several of these trims offer an upgrade from the standard Jetta 1.4 L turbo inline up to a 1.8 L and even 2 L inline engine. The increased horsepower and torque resulting from these upgrades is nicely paired with additional tech and creature comforts that help the higher-level trims really stand out. While several of the external features are cosmetic, many of the interior add-ons really start to improve the already impressive capabilities of the stock 2018 Jetta.

Although the physical benefits of the later model year are apparent, there are some equally tangible benefits lurking about in the paperwork. The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta has a significantly improved warranty over its 2017 counterpart, astonishingly doubling the effectiveness from the 2017’s 3 year / 36,000-miles to an impressive 6 year / 72,000-mile warranty. The increase in cost between the 2018 and 2017 Jetta is paltry, sitting somewhere less than $1000, which represents a huge increase in value between model years when considering the warranty alone.

Loaded with options and constantly improving in value, Volkswagen’s Jetta line continues to make an impression more than 35 years after its debut.
