It always helps to have an extra set of eyes on the road when you’re driving. That’s why Volkswagen is constantly researching and developing new driver assistance systems. Here are a few of the best safety features you can find on some Volkswagen models and how they work.

Lane Departure Warning With Lane Assist

Lane departure warning with lane assist uses a camera in the front of the rearview mirror to scan the lane markings in the road ahead of you. If the system detects that you’re drifting out of your lane without using your turn signal, it will give a gentle input to the steering wheel to help get your vehicle back on course. In some vehicles, such as the Volkswagen Touareg, the system will also warn you if you’re drifting in your lane by giving a warning vibration in the steering wheel.

Blind Spot Monitoring

The blind spot monitor available on some Volkswagen models watches that small area on the side of the vehicle that your mirrors can’t see and give you peace of mind when changing lanes. The system uses two sensors located on each rear corner of your vehicle. When these sensors detect another vehicle in your blind spot, an LED icon on the corresponding side mirror will light up.

Forward Collision Warning With Autonomous Emergency Braking

Forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking uses a sensor in the front of your vehicle to monitor traffic ahead of you. If it senses a potential collision ahead and you take too long to start braking or brake too lightly, the system will give you an audible and visual warning. The system will also start to increase braking pressure to try to avoid or reduce the impact of the collision. Finally, the system can also apply the brakes automatically if you don’t brake at all.

Front Assist With Pedestrian Monitoring

Front assist with pedestrian monitoring, which is available on the Volkswagen Atlas, can help prevent accidents with pedestrians. This system uses a sensor to detect a pedestrian heading toward the vehicle’s path and alert you with a visual and audible warning. If you don’t make an attempt to slow down, the system can also increase braking pressure or apply the brakes with full force automatically.

Rear Traffic Alert

Backing out of a tight parking space is tricky, especially if there are large vehicles or other structures blocking your view. However, the rear traffic alert system available on some Volkswagen models can help. This system uses sensors on both sides of the rear bumper to scan for approaching traffic when you’re backing up. If the system detects a vehicle is coming, it will give you a visual and audible warning. It can even brake for you if it detects you won’t be able to slow down in time.

If you’d like to try out some of these top safety features for yourself, head down to your Volkswagen dealer and test-drive the vehicles that have them available.
