Do you enjoy taking in the fresh air and natural wonders of Philadelphia? If so, there are plenty of opportunities for you to explore the outdoors in this bustling city. Here are three Philly parks to help you get in touch with nature.

Morris Arboretum

You’ll be impressed with the many fauna and flora awaiting you at Morris Arboretum. Located on the University of Pennsylvania campus, this facility is home to various meadows and woodlands, birds, and over 2,500 species of plants. There are also nine different self-guided tours for learning more about the different wildlife, foliage, structures, and sculptures that span throughout the park. You can also visit the Dorrance H. Hamilton Fernery with its many ferns and waterfalls or head to Springfield Mills to see a working 19th-century mill.

You don’t have to feel shy about bringing the kids here either. They’ll surely have fun at the Garden Railway, where model trains take to the rails on a quarter-mile track with various loops, tunnels, and bridges. With 15 different rail lines to follow, your little ones will find plenty to keep them on their toes.

Hours: Open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wissahickon Valley Park

Nestled along West Valley Green Road and Wissahickon Creek sits the Wissahickon Valley Park, which boasts over 50 miles of trails perfect for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Perhaps the most notable trail at Wissahickon Valley Park is the 5.35-mile Forbidden Drive, which offers a rocky and steep layout for those who don’t mind a bit of a challenging trek. You can also take a hike through the 1,800-acre Wissahickon Gorge that leads down to the creek.

Nature lovers will also appreciate the many meadows, creeks, dams, and plants and the 200+ bird species found throughout the park. However, the historical structures, lovely bridges, and symbolic statues offer plenty of excitement for visitors too. For a family-friendly retreat, head toward Forbidden Drive and relax at one of the many picnic areas and pavilions available to you.

Hours: Open daily until 1 a.m.

Fairmount Park

With over 9,200 acres of land encompassing various plants, wildlife, woodlands, and unique landscapes, Fairmount Park is an ideal spot for those who want to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature in central Philly. It features different trails perfect for walking, hiking, and biking, and it even hosts other activities, such as Japanese tea ceremonies and regular concerts.

If you want something fun to do with your loved ones, schedule in a family picnic, take your kiddos to the playgrounds, enjoy a tour of the park’s historic mansions, or explore Lloyd Hall for some indoor recreational entertainment. For even more fun, stop by the Philadelphia Museum of Art or the Philadelphia Zoo, both located on the grounds. Whatever you choose, you’ll find that Fairmount Park is a great way to spend your day outside.

Hours: Open daily from sunrise to sunset.
