Training for a race is a great way to get in shape and stay motivated to run. Philadelphia is home to many races, whether it is a road race, a triathlon, or even a bike race, and the fall is a wonderful time to participate. Even though the end of the year is close, there are still many races you can sign up for. Plan ahead for these annual Philly races.

The Philadelphia Marathon

The Philadelphia Marathon takes place every November and is one of the most historic races in the U.S. The 2017 race is on the weekend of Nov. 17-19 and kicks off with a Health and Fitness Expo. There is also a half-marathon over the weekend and a Fun Run for the kids. The Philadelphia Marathon is a fast race that covers mostly flat terrain and goes right through the heart of downtown Philadelphia. As you run, you’ll pass by some of the city’s most iconic landmarks including the Liberty Bell, the Betsy Ross House, and Independence Hall.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon Philadelphia

The 2017 running of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon will take place on Sept. 16 and 17. This is the seventh year of the race in Philly, and it is always fun. The headlining band for the 2017 race is blues style rock band Big Head Todd and the Monsters. They will play on Sunday, the 17th after the race at the Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series at Fairmount Park. This finish line concert is free, and it is open to the public. The race takes place through the streets of Philadelphia on a flat course known for its fast pace.

The Oktoberfest 13.1 & 10K

Join in the fun for a good cause at the Oktoberfest 13.1 & 10K on Oct. 29. This race is on an off-road course that takes place on the bike trail at Pennypack Park that runs along the Pennypack Creek. Along the way, you’ll come across several aid stations, including the Oktoberfest aid station at the end of the race with Heidi the Bavarian waitress ready to serve you a refreshing drink. To add some extra fun to this event, you can dress up in your favorite Lederhosen and get into the spirit of Oktoberfest.

Ugly Sweater Run

Dig into your closet to find your ugliest Christmas sweater to wear for The Ugly Sweater Run at Fairmount Park. This 5k run is just 3.1 miles and goes through the Philadelphia city streets and parks. At the starting line, there are huge inflatables along with a photo station and fun games for the season. At the finish line, you can gather your group for a family photo in the giant snow globe. Wear the ugliest sweater to the event, and you might even win the award for Best Ugly Sweater. This race takes place on Dec. 16, and the fun starts at 8:30 a.m.
