The Volkswagen Atlas is an all-new midsize crossover SUV. It is the model that finally adds a third-row seat to the Volkswagen lineup and comes with the amount of space most families need to get everyone from one place to another. The Atlas fits between the Touareg and the Tiguan when it comes to the features and options available. Here is what reviewers love about the 2018 Atlas.

The Atlas SE w/technology Trim Level

This mid-level trim gets you pretty much everything you need when considering performance, features, and the price. It comes standard with simulated leather upholstery, automatic headlights, and a heated driver seat. It also comes standard with rear sunshades, an 8-inch touchscreen, and automatic three-zone climate control. Some of the convenience features in this trim include a power rear liftgate, a power driver seat, and push button start.

The Exterior Design

The outside styling of the Atlas is similar to the Toureg, but with flared fenders and a more angular look. All the trims come standard with full LED headlights while LED tail lights are an available option. Choose the SEL trim for a panoramic sunroof and the option for 20-inch wheels along with the R-Line appearance package or the SEL Premium upgraded technology.

The Engine

The base engine for the Atlas is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that gets 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and there is an option to upgrade to a larger 3.6-liter V-6. This produces 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. The first four trims offer the option for either engine, while the SEL Premium comes only with the V-6. All models have an eight-speed automatic transmission and front wheel drive is standard. Choose the V-6 for the option to add Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.

The Technology

All the models come well-equipped. The standard 6.5-inch touchscreen works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and offers Bluetooth for phone and audio. Upgrade to the SE for a larger 8-inch touchscreen, or choose the high-end SEL Premium to get Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit. This has a video screen instead of the standard gauge cluster and puts a ton of information at your fingertips. You can configure it for your needs, and it includes navigation, an off-road view, estimated fuel economy and range, contact information, and even an altimeter. The SEL Premium also gets an upgraded version of the touchscreen display.

The Safety Features

Starting with the SE, the Atlas comes standard with a blind-spot monitoring system. The SE w/technology adds adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, forward collision prevention, and automatic emergency braking. If you bump up to the SEL, you’ll get park distance control, while the SEL Premium gets a parking assist system.

There are a lot of things reviewers love about the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas. It has the extra passenger space many families need, powerful engine choices, the latest safety features, and the latest technology to keep everyone connected while on the road.
