Want a quick and scenic adventure from Philadelphia to another city? These day trip ideas are all based on a destination you can visit and return from in one day, all while enjoying hours of new sights and fun activities. Though only a tiny sample, these five examples are a taste of the brilliant possibilities that await Philly residents.

Knoebels Amusement Resort

This is one of the furthest options, clocking in at around two and a half hours from Philly, but boy is it worth it to visit the largest free-admission amusement park in the country. Play carnival games for prizes, peruse museums of bizarre curiosities, meet friendly animals in humane habitats, play mini-golf or laser tag, and of course take a swing on some of the coasters and other high-flying thrill rides.

Wharton State Forest

Under an hour from Philly, Wharton State Forest is a lovely state-protected recreational area that’s also home to Batsto Village, a historic 18th-century settlement with mills, a post office, a general store, and even a blacksmith that still operates to this day. Be sure to check out Batsto Mansion as well, the beautiful centerpiece of the village. If you’re willing to stay longer than a day trip, Wharton is also home to Harrisville Village, a literal ghost town open for night tours.

Chanticleer Garden

If you don’t want to drive too far, Chanticleer Garden is only about 40 minutes away in Wayne, a neighboring town. Built in the early 1900s, the lush and colorful garden emphasizes natural beauty over organized flower beds, and surrounds an adorable home. The grounds are divided into many distinct spots with their own themes, like the Asian woods, orchard, meadow, and elevated flower walkways. With a place this close you can take a guided tour, explore the entire garden, and then come home before dark.

Washington, D.C.

Though likely an idea you’ve at least considered, this popular destination less than two hours from Philly has so much to see that everyone should go at least once. From the exciting historic downtown to the sprawling National Mall and the imposing structures of Capitol Hill, you’ll have plenty of stuff to check out. As a tip, stay until the evening and finish your visit with dinner at one of the capital’s swanky restaurants.

Lambertville

Lambertiville, the antique capital of New Jersey, is less than an hour from Philly and was founded in 1705. Travel to another time as you peruse historic streets filled with Victorian architecture, art galleries, and of course antique shops. Many visit Lambertville from other states just for the Golden Nugget Antiques Market, an antique buying and selling event held three days a week.

These five day trips are all awesome, but don’t let them be your limits! There are dozens of amazing places both in and around Philadelphia that you could spend the day at, and it just takes a little searching to find exactly what works for you. See what you and your traveling companions want to do and spend the time to pick something everyone will love. The place you choose could end up becoming a regular tradition.
