If you’re after a Volkswagen SUV, there are three choices: the Tiguan, Atlas, and Touareg. Read on to see the details of each vehicle, and you’ll get a lot of helpful information you can consider when browsing lots and online inventories.

Tiguan

The Tiguan is a compact crossover that was fully redesigned in past years with more fuel efficiency out of stronger engines. The Tiguan is also more spacious in modern iterations, with 23.8 cubic feet behind the seats. One of the clearest advantages over competing compact SUVs is the cabin, with higher-quality materials in more places. The relatively lightweight body gets plenty of pep from its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque.

For 2017 specifically, the Tiguan got an all-new Wolfsburg Edition, adding a few nice touches to comfort, performance, and entertainment. There’s also a Sport trim level that functions very similarly to the R-Line from past years, adding top-level features all around and specializing the Tiguan for a more exciting and performance-oriented style. VW also made the once-optional 6.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system standard across the board, with features like HD and satellite radio and the handy Volkswagen Car-Net app suite.

Atlas

If you’re after a three-row crossover or the biggest VW possible, the VW Atlas is for you, but there are other appealing qualities, as well. It’s more affordably priced than some two-row crossovers, has a graceful ride feel that will keep kids sleeping on a long road trip, and has a mix of pleasant cabin materials and smart ergonomics. An optional V6 with all-wheel drive is a worthwhile upgrade for anyone who wants a bit more thrust.

The 2018 Atlas is brand-new, and thus cannot be compared to any prior models, but it’s the best choice if you’re after value for money. It’s not far above the Tiguan in price but offers optional active safety features and driver aids that the Tiguan doesn’t.

Touareg

If you’re after something polished and loaded with classy features, say hello to the Touareg. This crossover boasts the best interior of the three models, but it’s also the most capable, with a class-leading towing capacity of up to 7,716 pounds. The Touareg has an even smoother and more graceful riding style than the Atlas, so bumps and older roads have little impact. It’s also the most welcome in off-road situations thanks to an advanced all-wheel-drive system.

For 2017 a rearview backup camera, trailer hitch, adaptive cruise control, and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen are now made standard on the Touareg. If you want the best SUV VW makes, with a heavy leaning toward luxury, you won’t be disappointed.

To differentiate these models in one sentence, the Tiguan has the most satisfying performance, the Atlas has the best value, and the Touareg is the fanciest. However, it’s clear that there’s more to the story, just based on the details above. If you’re still figuring out which VW crossover is right for you, we’d be happy to help.
